The yellow pages are an advertisement disguised as a directory. Stacks of unopened phonebooks sit outside. However, critics say that it's not reliable - and that if you opt out, there's a pretty good chance you'll get a phonebook anyway. Now, if you don't use the phonebook, manufacturers have created a system that lets you opt out online. Meanwhile, many states legally require phone companies to deliver the white pages as a public service, though these laws are gradually disappearing over time. So why are phonebooks still regularly delivered to most American households every year? Mainly because companies have fought regulations to phase out the yellow pages out of self-interest - they're packed full of ads, and make these companies money. But for most people, they've become useless - and simply recycling or throwing away the 650,000 tons of phonebooks distributed nationally each year costs municipalities somewhere between $45 and $62 million. Phonebooks were once extremely useful: before the internet, they were the main way we had of looking up phone numbers and addresses of local businesses or acquaintances. You might have also gotten the white pages (listing residential addresses), either as a separate volume or combined as one book.Īnd if you're like 70 percent of Americans, you probably won't even open the phonebook once before the next year's batch arrives.Īround 70 percent of americans don't use phonebooks Last month, you probably got a fat new yellow pages phonebook (listing all the businesses in your area) delivered to your doorstep. The number of wild cards in a meld may be restricted.ĭepending on the variation of the game, players take turns adding and shedding cards from their hands. Wild cards (such as a joker) may be used to represent any card in a meld. In some variations the melds (sets and runs) must be 3 or 4 cards, while other variations allow larger melds through the use of longer runs, for example: 8 ♠ 9 ♠ 10 ♠ J ♠ Q ♠ or, if multiple decks or wild cards are used, 5 ♦ 5 ♦ 5 ♥ 5 ♠ 5 ♠ or Q ♥ Q ♦ Jkr Q ♣. In a few variations of rummy, other patterns may be allowed. Very few variations allow runs that have mixed suits. A run consists of at least three consecutive cards of the same suit J ♣ Q ♣ K ♣ or 4 ♥ 5 ♥ 6 ♥ 7 ♥. A set consists of at least three cards of the same rank, for example 4 ♥ 4 ♦ 4 ♠ or K ♥ K ♦ K ♠ K ♣. In Indian Rummy, 13 cards are dealt to each player.Ī meld can either be a set (also known as a book) or a run. In 500 Rummy, each player is given seven cards. In rummy games with five players, each player is given six cards. In 10 Cards Rummy, which is often played with two, three or four players, each player gets ten cards. In most variations, a single card is turned face up next to the stock where players discard or shed cards, and this is known as the discard pile. The un-dealt cards are placed in a face down stack in the middle, which is known as the stock. General features of rummy-style games Deal ĭepending on the variation, each player receives a certain number of cards from either a standard deck of 52 cards, more than one deck or a special deck of cards used for specific games. Others say the origin lies in the game Rum Poker, or in the popular liquor of the same name. Some attribute it to the British slang word rum, meaning odd, strange, or queer. Several theories about the origin of the name "rummy" exist. Rummy games are popular in India, and it is likely that Indian rummy is an extension of gin rummy and 500 rum, which originated from the United States. Rummy variations like Gin and Canasta became popular in the twentieth century. The rummy principle of drawing and discarding with a view to melding appears in Chinese card games at least in the early 19th century, and perhaps as early as the 18th century. Games scholar David Parlett combines these two theories, and proposes that the Mexican game of Conquian is ancestral to all rummy games, and that Conquian is the equivalent of the Chinese game Khanhoo. The second is that Rummy originated in Asia, and that Rummy was the result of a Mahjongg variant named Kun P'ai that was Westernized as Khanhoo by W.H. Foster's book Foster's Complete Hoyle, which was played with a 40 card Spanish deck and had melding mechanics. The first is that it originated in Mexico around the 1890s in a game described as Conquian in R.F. There are two common theories about the origin of Rummy, attributing its origins in either Mexico or China in the nineteenth century. 5 Variations with non-Western cards or special equipment.2 General features of rummy-style games. If he does not want that card, the rest of the players may choose to take (or buy) it before he draws a card from the stack. Eventually, nearly all lighthouses were connected to the national mains supply, and now the only stations using diesel-electric generating plants are those on remote islands.Įlsewhere the generators became silent backups for emergencies. These were the days of night watches, and every few hours keepers wound up a clockwork mechanism to ensure the lenses continued to revolve.īy 1957 all the main lights had been electrified and the paramount importance of keepers slowly eroded. Inside the glass lenses the actual light looked like a large Tilley lantern. Later vaporised kerosine did the same job. The lights were originally powered by colza oil, a derivative of rape. Technology has subverted this long and honourable tradition. By 1881 another 20 lighthouses had been shipped from England and erected, and in 1911 78 keepers were tending some 42 lights around the coast from Cape Maria Van Diemen in the north to Centre Island in the south.Īs late as 1974 25 manned “lights” remained, yet at the time this article was researched just six stations had fulltime residential staff. The first lighthouse began operating at Pencarrow Head (near the entrance to Wellington harbour) in 1859. During our early history shipwrecks became common on the unlit coast and by 1845 more than 100 vessels had been totally lost. After all, even 2000 years ago beacon fires were being lit on high cliffs to guide mariners, and over the last five centuries in Britain the Elder Brethren of Trinity House had developed the most reputable and valued manned lighthouse service in the world. When Alan Martin began his career it seemed a totally secure occupation. However, the Martins admit that earlier they had felt confused and exhausted by a very long public row concerning their professional future. It seems to epitomise their image of themselves and other couples in the lighthouse service - people who help rather than need help, maintain solidarity of spirit against the odds and hugely enjoy life because they are uncrushable survivors. Mr and Mrs Martin of Nugget Point lighthouse delight in telling this story. Jobless, middle-aged and happy they would go back to civilisation for one final adventure. But after Alan’s admission that night the Martins felt completely released from anxiety about the future. By June 20, 1990, the last of our manned lighthouses will be automated. They stared at each other for a moment, then burst out laughing.Īlan Martin is New Zealand’s longest-serving lighthouse keeper and now, like all the others, he is about to lose his way of life. She looked back at him sleepily, grinned and said calmly, “Then it has been a joke for 27 years of our lives and now it looks like the joke is on you!” But you took the whole thing so seriously that I had no choice but to follow through.” “Remember at the beginning when I asked if you would like to live in a lighthouse and you became so enthusiastic? Well, I just meant it as a joke, Shirley. He sat up in bed, tapped his wife on the shoulder, looked her in the eye and admitted his secret. Valve Head of Business Development Jan-Peter Ewert said the company is currently working on a "more accurate" way for users and developers to "get data out of Steam," though apparently this kind of Achievement-derived data set wasn't what he had in mind.īefore the Achievement data hole could be plugged, Sergey Galyonkin was able to integrate the method into the machine learning algorithm used for Steam Spy, where the data was briefly displayed on individual game pages earlier in the week. That move comes just months after Valve started protecting individual Steam usage data by default, cutting off the previous estimation method used by Steam Gauge and Steam Spy. Caveatsįurther Reading Valve working on “more accurate” replacement for Steam Spy’s sales dataBy July 4, Valve updated its Steam API to provide much less precision in its Achievement percentages, cutting off this new data source altogether. This process allows for extremely accurate reverse engineering of the denominator representing the total player base for an Achievement percentage.Īs Glaiel points out, for instance, an Achievement earned by 0.012782207690179348 percent of players on his game translates precisely to 8 players out of 62,587 without any rounding necessary (once some vagaries of floating point representation are ironed out). (This is useful since each game's player count must be a whole number.) With multiple Achievements to check against, it's possible to find a common denominator that works for all the percentages with high reliability. This added precision means that many Achievement percentages can only be factored into specific whole numbers. In the Steam API, however, the Achievement percentages were, until recently, provided to an extremely precise 16 decimal places. On the Steam web site, that data appears rounded to two decimal places. The new data derivation method, as ably explained in a Medium post from The End Is Nigh developer Tyler Glaiel, centers on the percentage of players who have accomplished developer-defined Achievements associated with many games on the service. While Valve has now closed this inadvertent data leak, Ars can still provide the data it revealed as a historical record of the aggregate popularity of a large portion of the Steam library. A recently discovered hole in Valve's API allowed observers to generate extremely precise and publicly accessible data for the total number of players for thousands of Steam games. |
